Course Summary

This course is a unique opportunity to learn how to handle a family law matter from client retention through trial.  The panel is chaired by Connolly Oyler with approximately 50 years of experience in family law; Barbara Rice, who has been on the Superior Court Family law staff for over 15 years; and Ruth Estep with approximately 22 years of experience. 

We covered a multitude of topics, including: the initial phone call and interview; the initial OSC and motions (including, In Limine, Bifurcation and related matters); discovery; reconsideration and modification prior to trial; preparation for trial; your client’s testimony and forensic issues; what to expect and do at trial; important post trial actions needed; the appeal; paternity issues and palimony suits; ethics and a list of “do’s and don’ts.”

Connolly Oyler, Esq.

A recognized expert in Family Law, Mr. Oyler has practiced law for over 50 years, having been a sole practitioner since 1959. He specializes in all areas of Family Law, including dissolutions, paternity, prenuptial agreements, marital torts and child custody arrangements.

Mr. Oyler was named Super Lawyer in 2004, one of only 10 Family Law attorneys designated as such in Southern California.

Mr. Oyler is in frequent demand as a lecturer and seminar leader on a diverse number of Family Law topics and has addressed the California Trial Lawyers Association, American Bar Association and California State Bar Association.

Mr. Oyler has been a member of the San Fernando Valley Bar Association since 1963 and has served as its President and Family Law Section Chairman since 1984. He has been active in the Santa Monica Bar Association, and is former Co-Chairman of its Family Law Section and its president elect. Mr. Oyler currently serves as a Superior Court Mediator, Arbitrator and Judge Pro Tem.

A member of the American Bar Association, Mr. Oyler served as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the California State Bar Association, Family Law Section. He has served as a trustee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and is active in its Family Law Section; he is also a past Vice Chair of its Arbitration Committee and a former member of its Judiciary Committee.

Mr. Oyler graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in economics from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1955. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, which is the top academic student's award. In 1958, he received his LL.B from the University of Southern California where he was a member of the Law Review and Phi Alpha Delta.

Barbara Rice, Esq.
Career Research Attorney
Los Angeles County Superior Court, Family Law Department

Barbara Rice has been a Research Attorney for the Los Angeles Superior Court’s Family Law Department for more than fifteen years.  Ms. Rice recommends ruling on motions pending in multiple Family Law departments, as well as Petitions to Approve Minors’ Contracts in Art, Entertainment and Professional Sports, and Applications for Withdrawal of Funds from Minors’ Blocked Accounts.

Ms. Rice served as a civil litigator for a few years prior to joining the court as a career staff attorney in the Family Law Department.   She received her J.D. from Pepperdine University School of Law and was the Associate Editor of the Law Review.

Ruth Lynn Estep, Esq.

A seasoned litigator, Ruth Lynn Estep has been practicing Family Law for nearly ten years.  She is an expert as Minor's Counsel in high conflict custody litigation. Prior to switching her practice to Family Law, Ms. Estep was a civil litigator for almost twenty years.  She is a member of various bar associations and a frequent lecturer on Family Law topics.

Seminar, Webinar, Webcast Registration and Attendance Terms & Policies

Reminder: The room temperature at hotels and other seminar locations are notoriously hard to control. Please bring a sweater or jacket in case it gets cold and/or layer as if you are going to the movies so you are comfortable.

Recording policy: No audio or video recording of any program is permitted.

Seminar Cancellations: Should you be unable to attend for any reason, please inform us in writing no later than 14 days prior to the event and a credit voucher will be issued. If you prefer, a refund, less a $50 non-refundable deposit, will be issued. No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received within 14 days of an event.

Substitutions may be made at any time.

Webinars, Tele-seminars and Webcast Cancellations: Once log-in codes and passwords are issued for a webinar, tele-seminars or webcasts, a refund is not possible. If for any reason you cannot attend the event after you have received the codes, we will automatically convert your registration to an instant streaming/instant download or CD format and provide you with the information you need to access the recording after the program concludes and the recording is available.

Return/Refund Policy for Tapes/CDs/DVDs:

Tapes, CDs and DVDs are returnable for a full refund or replacement if defective, within 90 days of purchase.
