HIPAA Ethics Update: Lawyers in the compliance crosshairs

How to avoid new penalties and ethical issues when dealing with health and medical information and clients

Course Summary

Do you or your law firm have any medical or healthcare-related clients?  If so, in February 2010 you will almost surely be subject to brand-new contracting and data security rules under HIPAA.

Now you, and your law firm – not just your healthcare clients – are at risk under HIPAA.  Do you know how to comply with these tough new rules?  Many firms (especially if you don’t do very much work for healthcare clients, or have a small healthcare group) are unaware of these new rules, which were enacted as part of last February’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (“ARRA”), also known as the “stimulus package”.

Register now for this 90-minute Teleseminar/Webinar to help you avoid the risk of substantial civil and even criminal penalties, DSHS and other investigations, and malpractice and ethical violations.

These brand-new rules create important new legal, ethical and practical risks for any attorney who uses medical or health data for healthcare clients.  This Teleseminar/Webinar will ensure you know these new risks and in just 90 minutes will provide you greater familiarity with most of the critical issues.

No one can better help you plan for and reduce these risks than John R. Christiansen, a 25+ year attorney who specializes in the law of healthcare data security.  John is known for prescribing specific governance, policy and contracting tools to minimize risk – for both practical solutions, and legal strategies, that better protect his clients.  He will be joined for this Teleseminar/Webinar by Michael Simon, CTO of Creation Logic, who can answer technical questions.

This Teleseminar/Webinar is Co-Sponsored by Emerald Education.

Christiansen IT Law

The use of information technology ("IT") is becoming increasingly regulated, and new technologies lead to new legal risks.  John R. Christiansen, an attorney with deep experience and a nationally-recognized expert in this field, founded Christiansen IT Law to help organizations recognize, understand and manage their IT risks, and use governance, policy and contracting tools to minimize their IT-related exposures while maximizing the real benefits of using IT.

Christiansen IT Law serves clients including healthcare and financial organizations, governments and IT services providers in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the United States.  One of John’s major projects from 2005 – 2009 was service as a project leader and technical analyst in the Health Information Security and Privacy Collaboration, a federally-funded national study of barriers and solutions to electronic clinical data sharing.

John began practicing law in 1985 and began working on IT law issues in the early 1990s.  He is a frequent national speaker and regularly publishes on healthcare technology issues; his most recent book is An Integrated Standard of Care for Healthcare Information Security: HIPAA, Risk Management and Beyond (2005), the definitive legal treatise on security obligations applicable to healthcare information.

John participates in a number of national organizations and boards.
