Course Summary

Ever want to go behind the scenes at the court and find out what judges really look for in writing? This course will focus on persuasive writing in the trial courts, particularly law and motion. Topics covered will include general writing skills and logic necessary for successful argument as well as practical procedural requirements for motions, including, but not limited to, demurrers/motions to dismiss, summary judgment and discovery. Both federal and state courts will be covered. The course will be helpful to both the new and experienced practitioner, emphasizing specific procedure for successful practice in California courts that is not always specifically covered in law school curriculum.

As TRUSTe's General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, John is responsible for all of TRUSTe's legal affairs and for providing legal and business counsel to the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors. He also ensures that the organization's online safety programs are built on a strong legal framework. John makes certain that TRUSTe's enforcement and compliance efforts are thorough, transparent, and defensible.

Prior to joining TRUSTe, John served as Chief Privacy Officer of CheckFree Corporation (now Fiserv) and has provided advice to companies on secure eCommerce while in private practice. He frequently lectures on secure e-commerce and public key infrastructure (PKI). John graduated from St. Mary's University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas, where he was the solicitations editor of the Law Journal. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Texas, Austin. 

Robert J. Newmeyer, Esq.
Career Law Clerk
U.S. District Court, Southern District of California

Robert Newmeyer is a career law clerk for a district judge in the United States District Court, Southern District of California. Previously, Mr. Newmeyer served for three years as a law clerk to the Hon. Roger T. Benitez, (then) U.S. Magistrate Judge, Southern District of California at El Centro. Prior to that, Mr. Newmeyer served for six years as a law clerk to Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Hon. Roger C. McKee (ret.), Southern District of California, and for four years as a law clerk to U.S. Magistrate Judge Hon. Jeffrey S. Wolfe (ret.), in the Northern District of Oklahoma. Mr. Newmeyer has also worked in private practice litigating cases in federal district courts in Hawaii, Montana, Maine, Texas, and Arkansas, and appellate courts in the 1st, 5th, 8th and 9th circuits.

Kenneth Jensen, Esq.
Staff Attorney
San Diego Superior Court

Kenneth Jensen has been a staff attorney at the San Diego Superior court for almost fifteen years. He currently serves in the East County Division, under Judge Laura Halgren.  In the past he has worked for various Superior Court judges in several departments, including Judges Jan Goldsmith, Lillian Lim, Ronald Styn, Robert May and Kevin Midlam.  Prior to joining the court, Mr. Jensen served as a legal intern at the United States Attorney’s Office and worked for the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program.  While in law school Mr. Jensen wrote the third place brief in the Jessup International Appellate Team competition and assisted teaching legal research and writing at California Western School of Law.  Mr. Jensen has taught legal education seminars on civil litigation topics, such as Offers of Compromise (CCP 998), Good Faith Settlement (CCP 998), Attorney fees, Judicial References, and Legislation updates.

Reminder: The room temperature at hotels and other seminar locations are notoriously hard to control. Please bring a sweater or jacket in case it gets cold and/or layer as if you are going to the movies so you are comfortable.

Recording policy: No audio or video recording of any program is permitted.

Seminar Cancellations: Should you be unable to attend for any reason, please inform us in writing no later than 14 days prior to the event and a credit voucher will be issued. If you prefer, a refund, less a $50 non-refundable deposit, will be issued. No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received within 14 days of an event.

Substitutions may be made at any time.

Webinars, Tele-seminars and Webcast Cancellations: Once log-in codes and passwords are issued for a webinar, tele-seminars or webcasts, a refund is not possible.
